I saved all my paper route and strawberry picking from when I was 13 and at 15 (1971) bought a 1964 GTO with a 389 Tri-power with a power glide and it had a 390 open rear end from my uncle in Ky for $800 and had to borrow $100 from my parents with a $15.00 a month payment. Two weeks after I got my license I got nailed for unlawful take off (Smoking the tires) in front of the high school and lost my license for 6 months when I had to go to a court of my piers.
I really wish I kept that car, but I sold it when I got a 70 Z-28 LT1 for graduation in 1974....oh well as they say if we knew then what we know now life would be so much better. I have actually put a request in the GTO forums if anyone knows where this car is and posted the VIN number as I still have a old registration with my Mom's name on it. Attachment 492 |

Wow Ric, we were close with our choice of cars...
While I still had the '63 Impala, I fell in love with my girlfriends sisters '65 GTO 389 Tri-Power and bought it from her for $600! Later that same year ('73) I sold the Impala for $275 bucks with new paint and new top! In '74 on the way to work, I saw a silver car with black stripes on the hood that caught my eye at a car lot. I had always wanted a '69 Z/28 and wondered if that was what I had seen. I spun around and went back to the car lot and sure enough, it was a '69 DZ302 Z/28 in silver and black w/4-speed. $1,195.00 was on the windhield with 33Kmiles! The car was only 5 years old with only 33,000 miles and I could get it for under $2,000 bucks! Yep, goodbye GTO - hello Z/28! :D BTW, they gave me $600 trade-in on the GTO! Man, I wish I had all 3 of those cars today!:( Greg |

70 Nova. I found one with the front end smashed heading to the bone yard paid $50 and found another a couple of weeks later with the rear smashed also heading to the yard paid $50 for that one. Me, my dad and uncle spent a whole Saturday taking the front half and mating to the back half to make one whole unsmashed Nova. My best friend at the time worked at his dads tire store. He got me set of Cragas S/S's with tire for $100 (used). So for around a $300 car it looked pretty cool. The only down side is it had a straight six with a glide. but man it sure looked cool. I drove that car eveywhere for three years. I ended up selling it for $300. The funny part about this is I have a 16 year old daughter that heard this story and she would like to do the same thing. I don't think I will be able to find two Novas for a $100.

Mine was a 56 Chevy.
It belonged to my neighbor and had sat in his barn for a number of years. It had 43,000 miles and had a 265 v8 and powerglide trans. It was robin egg blue and white. I was 14 when I bought it, 3 months before I got my DL. That was in 1975. I piddled with it and was driving it but smelled old and didn't go as fast as I wanted so I traded it for a 68 Camaro. |
