New member saying hello and already asking for help

Hello all. New to the site, but not new to Chevelles. I haven't owned one for 25 years or so, but the bug has recently bit me. I've had three in my life - all '67's; (2) hard tops, and (1) rag top. Regret selling everone but family came first. I think I found a car that's worth a look, but I'm having difficulty with the VIN (cowl tag). The numbers don't much matter other than curiosity. It is a Malibu 2 door HT, with a six, buckets, PG, w/ floor console (I have yet to physically see the car but got plenty of pictures from the guy - maybe too rough for my blood, lot's of rust). Attached is a layout of the VIN. I can get most the numbers, but not all. Should the VIN be a 13517 instead of a 13617 if it's a six? Also, does anyone know what the "1X" is as well as the "493". I don't think it's anything special, just doing some research. Thanks in advance for the help. I'm looking foreword to getting another one of these.

What is the actual VIN number of the car? The number on the trim tag says it's a 2 door hard top as defined by Fisher Body. The assembly plant could install a 6 or 8 cyl and they assigned the actual VIN.

The 493 is a Fisher Body job number. 1X, not sure it may be the final inspection stamp. Typically they were a single digit, 1 or 2 or 3, etc. Location moved around too, upper right or lower right.

Welcome to the site! If you don't get this Chevelle I'm sure you'll find another.

Welcome, I have heard where the vin tag and the cowl tags don't alway match. The vin tag is the one that matters. 6 clyinders did have the 135 vin, and the eight clyinder had the 136, and the SS models were 138 vins. I have heard where a V8 got put in a 135 vin in some of the earlier models but not sure of what year. Here's another site you could check out for more info. http://chevellestuff.net/1967/vin.htm

Thanks for all the information, guys. Gerat site. I got some more pictures of the car I was looking at. My search will continue. I think the rust was all that was holding it together, it's pretty bad.
