Driver's side mirror came off

Ok, I was driving my Astro van yesterday on the expressway when I noticed that my side view mirror was vibrating. You know, it looked like someone was shaking the mirror, and it was so annoying. I figured I would find out what was going on when I got home.

Less than a minute later I look at the mirror and it is coming off, I open my window and grab the actual mirror just as it let go.

So my question is, what do I use to clean the old "gunk" off the side view mirror on the van and on the back of the glass mirror ? Also what kind of adhesive to I use to put the mirror back on ? The temps are not supposed to be above low 60's for the next week, and I hate driving without my side mirror, especially in a full size van.

Ive never encountered that one but you should be able to pull most of the glue off and get some glass adhesive from the home improvement stores or the auto parts store.

For optimal adhesion, utilize a mixture of duct tape, 2 part epoxy, shrink wrap, bailing twine, and original flavor bubble yum. A few short lengths of dowel rod should secure it in place until the gum cures up. :D

Sounds like something from The Red Green Show. But wait, it can't be, because he ONLY utilizes duct tape. But I will give it a try.

The only problem is that I am dealing with 2 different surfaces. The glass/mirror itself and the metal plate inside the actual side view mirror. Which, by the way, is still attached to the van so I can't even warm it up or bring it to room temp.

So we went to O'Reily's today and got some heavy duty 2 sided tape. The kind you would use to put the trim on a car. We cleaned off both surfaces and put the tape on. So far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Black 3M weatherstrip adhesive.Just load it up good. I've put just about everything together on a car with this crap.

Thanks Gary. If it does not seem to hold with this tape then I will do what you suggest.

Wait a minute, you said that you put everything together on a car with it ? This from a man who is a perfectionist. Hmmmm....makes me wonder. lol
