Over flow bottle
 

Did the 72's come with one or did it dump on the ground ? If not what are you using ?

I don't know grumpy, I hope someone can let us know...

I've been searching images on "72 chevelle survivor" hoping to see a pic or two of under the hood. I still don't know...

I have not asked on any of the other boards but have done some reading. I think it did not come with one but ain't positive. With a bit more poking around I found a post that referred to using the following parts list from 82-87 Camaro. Using these parts look a bit more "stock" then throwing one from Summit. Heres the GM parts list.

White bottle.....GM #14070997
Bottle cap........GM #15630112
Rad cap...........GM #10409635

I am sure a bone yard will have these pretty cheap but I want new ones to match the look of everything else under the hood. I will post the prices the dealer gives me on Monday.

72 s did not come with an overflow tank, just drained onto the ground. On mine I put one in the area behind the battery and you can barely see it .Mine came off of a 78 Buick regal ,I cut one corner with a bolt hole off and sanded smoth. It just lays in place behind the battery ,not secured in at all. It looks just like it was supposed to be there.

Tucked mine right in front of the header panel. This is a catch can however, not a recovery bottle. There is no tube extending to the bottom. Also, I used a piece of hose to protect the tubing where it goes through the header.

Don't have one on my car, I just don't fill the radiator too much. If you know the right level for the rad it shouldn't overflow. I know they're not a bad idea in case the car ever overheats and you have to have one at the track.

72's do not have overflow bottles, typically the radiator was filled to 3" from the top for expansion room and the radiator cap allowed the radiator to puke the excess amount out onto the ground.

How does an overflow bottle recirculate the overflow back into the cooling system? I was thinking about just using a catch can, so that in the event of a boil over or puke episode, that it wouldn't spray all over everything. Right now I just have a length of 1/2" clear tubing with some braided steel over it, and it has made a mess of things. Seems like a JY run might score me some sort of restorable holding vessel. Is there any sort of real advantage to having one that can put the fluid back into the radiator?

The tank has a tube that goes to the bottom. When the rad cools, the coolant contracts and creates a vacuum that sucks the overflow coolant back in.
