Actually the "D" represents 500 in Roman Numerals and we all know "S" in English means plural so ....

500/D's (plural) times two equals 1000 .... the grumpy old man is 1000 years old!

.... simple math!

Oh and tell him happy birfday for me, I would tell him myself but he probably can't hear me from this far away!
