Hank sounds like you have a good doctor who is looking out for your wife in the long run. Even if she has the full knee replacement and has a little longer recovery/therapy time it would be better than her having to go thru the total replacement at a later time. And as we all know as we get older it takes longer and longer for our bodies to heal. Give her our best wishes for everything to go well.
My heart goes out to you with your dog. We just had to make the decision a few months ago to put our cat to sleep. He had feline leukemia, cat cancer, and had lost a lot of weight and was having trouble getting around. We were giving him IV fluids everyday for weeks. After taking him to the vet and talking to her, we decided it was best to put "Topaz" out of his misery. The morning before I took Topaz to the vet he came out of the bedroom and sat down in front of me and just looked at me. I felt like he was saying "I am ready". It was hard, but we all got to say goodbye. I am glad that you are waiting for your daughter to come and say her goodbyes.
