I've had a DeVilbiss 5hp, 20 gallon compressor for close to 20 years now. It's done a good job but it will run a lot when using some tools, like a grinder or cutoff wheel, they take a lot of air. Impact wrench, chisel or nailers aren't problem since they don't use quite as much air flow. I can't complain but I would go bigger if I was buying one today. Can't say much about brands but I believe HD and Lowes both carry good quality compressors.

DO NOT buy an "oilless" compressor... they're very noisy and don't last.

I have a small Porter Cable that works fine for little jobs... I'll get a bigger 80-gal upright 2-stage when I get a bigger garage.

I agree with the noisy part but like i said, mine is going on 20 years old, oilless, and still going strong.

I have an upright one I bought about 15 years ago from Lowes ,60 gal single stage(I think) 220 volt .It has worked good all these years without a problem but sanders and impact guns will give it a major work out .My next one will be a 2 stage with 80 gallon tank but my current one has done everything Ive ever needed ,sometimes I just have to take a water or Coke break to let it build up again. Check Craigslist and garage sales as Ive seen some for cheap when I didnt need them.
