Unhappy rear end depression :(

ok i am a little depressed right now about the rear end of my chevelle. i really wanted to get it done before winter hits because the only way i can get the rear in and out from under my car i have to keep the garage door open. So as you know i check on my rear and i confirmed that it is a spool with 4.11 gears and strange axles with 33 splines. So i said ok now that i know they are 33 spline let me look at some posi units for my chevelle. i almost cried! they are around $600 bucks! i only have about 250 saved up right now and i was hoping to save another 250 or so get everything i need for the rear. as of right now i am just thinking about leaving it as a spool and just drive it that way! i have so many other things i want to get and do to my chevelle before spring 2012 so i can have the car ready for the road! i am clueless and a little depressed on what to do! sorry had to rant!

I can't help you on what to do but street driving that spool isn't the best idea in the world. Not even from a safety stand point but just the wear and tear is bad enough. Have you checked with the guys who rebuild 12 bolts? They might have a posi you could purchase for cheap that had not yet been rebuilt. What about picking up a 10 bolt for next to nothing until you get a chance to fix the 12 bolt correctly? I gave away a working 10 bolt earlier this summer just to get it out of my garage.

Just my $.02

Welcome the world of working on these cars. This why it has taken me almost 6 years to get to the point I'm at. I figured I would be on the road long before this. For me it was having to rebuild a motor I was not expecting too this last spring. I agree look around for a used posi unit. I see them on craigslist all the time or put a 10 bolt under it like Eric suggested. I see them free all the time or for less then a $100 around here. It would at least allow to drive your car.

Not enough money not enough time ... facts of life.

If your only resource for immediate money is the 250 bux in your hand ... then dont do nuthin, your too broke to even consider anything other than day to day expenses ... otherwise ... put your 600 on a credit card AND PAY IT OFF quickly .... 10% of $300, which is the average balance on the card, is $15 ... assuming you pay it off in 6 months ... just use disipline and pay the SOB off! .... fifteen bux, big deal!

its not a matter of being broke i promised my wife when i got the car i wouldnt put anything on a credit card and i am sticking to that. i rebuilt my motor and got all new parts already and that was at a time when i still had money left over from selling my motorcycle. now i am taking about 300 bucks a month and putting it aside for the chevelle. not including the money i spend on my rx7. i am about to give up on that car but i put so much time and money to get my rx7 where it is i almost dont want to sell it. i was able to get my rx7 done in one winter. and when i took the LT1 out and put the LS6 in i did it all in a winter. I have a ton of parts for my chevelle that i am trying to sell off but NO one wants anything. i am about to just sell my 12bolt rear end and call it a day and get a new one. my buddy offered me his fully built 10 bolt but i dont want to put a 10 bolt. if my ss came with an 12 bolt then i want to keep it a 12 bolt you know. My summit card is at zero and i want to keep it that way but the time is killing me to get the dam car done . i want to see it out spring 2012. i cant see anything Major stopping me from that goal. i have the motor rebuild the trans is rebuilt now rebuild the rear i guess and then all the 5 and dime is going to start. like the brakes the lines the hoses i know all that i am ready for all that. it just seems like right now i am at a stand still with the car because now i have to spend big bucks on the car instead of like 100 here 100 there. i did all that now i have to come up with at least 1000 to finish my rear end off. but we shall see. i already put my christmas money aside and i dont want to touch that money because its for my daughter and my family. and i have to get my wife some gifts too..lol but we shall see what happens just a little depressed at not seeing major progress thats all

I would sit down and talk to the Mrs. I would tell her what Rank suggested. No matter whether she is a car nut or not, the car is an asset to both of you. I know that I am working on 3 years + in doing the things I want to my car. And unfortunately you are at one of the most expensive parts. I wish you the best, but I still think talking to the Mrs. is the best bet.
