hi all. Just got a 65 chevelle project car and have a few questions on what transmission to use. I have 2 different engine possibilities. I have a fresh 454 bbc i could put in or i have a 327 vette motor. Not sure which way i am going but would any year 4 speed bolt up to either motor, for example something out of a 80's or 90's camaro. Do I need something heavier duty for the 454. Just looking for suggestions or ideas from other members who have done similar projects. thanks

I know everyone is hung up on 454 motors for everything it seems. For the year of the car I would go with the 327, as far as the transmisson I don't think the trans will be the issue. You need to find the bell housing that will bolt up to both the motor and trans. There are so many after market options out there that may not be an issue either. I wish I had more knowledge on what set up would best for you.

Avoid the cast iron Saginaw 4 speeds at all costs! They are made of glass and won't hold up to much. Get yourself a Muncie - M20 or M21. Or, a Super T10 out of a 70's Trans Am, Corvette, etc. Make sure you identify the gear ratios in the T10, some of them have stump puller 1st gear ratios - but are weak.
I am with Ray, I would use the 327 and dress it like a 350HP L79 327.
