Default Sounds like the problem is the troque converter

Got a call from Lonny tonight. He had taken my car out for a ride and had the same exact problems that I had. He even had more. He was having to have the RPM's up higher for it to shift at all.

He said he took it apart and he did find a very small amount of metal shavings in the trans, but not any more than would be considered normal. He suspects that it is the torque converter that is causing the problems with shifting.

Of course I won't have my car back this week, because the converter is the one thing that Lonny doesn't do. It may be another week. I don't mind, I just want it back working right.

Let me ask you guys, you have read most of my posts about the problem with my transmission (or at least I hope you have). In your experiences, have you ever had a problem with your car shifting caused by your torque converter ?

Yes, had an edge converter a few years back. It was a quirky pain in my neck. Everyone kept blaming the transmission, but the fluid and filter were clean. I swapped back to a stock converter.

It is nice, or not nice, to know that someone else has experienced this issue. I am glad to hear that you fixed your problem. Now I just hope mine is fixed soon too.

Without the correct fluid pressure being supplied to the transmission the transmission will not shift correctly. So a torgue converter not working correctly makes since.

When the trans was installed, here in Michigan, we were sent the pressure tool from the builder of the trans. His tool was used to make sure that the pressure was correct, and then of course it was sent back to him. So what was the pressure when I had the problem, I was unable to check. But, the conversation the other night did not indicate to me that there was any problem with the pressure. At this point, I am hoping, that I can trust the professional.

It's an overdrive, correct? And you lost 3rd & 4th? That indicates the lock up clutch took a dump since the verter locks in 3rd and 4th. Just my $0.02

You might want to talk to your transmission guy about this.

Oh I will. I also talked to Chuck Finch yesterday. Chuck is the president of the Chevelle Club of Michigan, and owns his own restoration business. He has a guy that has been doing transmissions for him for many years, as well as for many of the other guys in the club. If I still have issues when I get my car back, I will be contacting this guy to take a look. I appreciate all the help you guys have given me with this issue.

Hopefully it will be taken care of when you get it back and wont have to worry about taking it anywhere else .
