Default Wood Splitters

Anyone here own or use a gas powered wood splitter ? Im about to have some large oak trees cut down and plan to use the wood for my heat this coming winter and my back cant hold out to do it all with a Go Devil like I normally use .I have been looking at Tractor Supply at their 22 ton splitter for about $1000 versus renting one from Home Depot for $100 per day . I have never split wood with a machine before so tell me what you think. Im definitely not renting one at that price daily .

John if it seems feasible to you and it will save your back, I would say go for it. Machine splitting is great. Just make sure you don't overload it and all will be fine.

I would say if you can afford it, purchasing a wood cutter would probably pay for itself in the first year. Especially with the land and trees that you have.

I built one last fall because I use wood as my main source of heat, even though I have central HVAC I don't wanna pay for the gas it uses. I wanted something that I knew would last me a long time so I built it heavy duty. I know several people that have bought them from home depot and tractor supply that have had them for years and have never had any problems with them. A 22 ton log splitter will split just about anything you would want to split up, plus most of the ones you buy will flip up vertical so you can split big pieces without having to lift them up and saves your back! If you can afford it and it's something you would use winter after winter then I'd say go for it! If it's something you would only use a few times, it may be better to rent one so you wouldn't have to store it when not in use and you wouldn't have to worry about the maintenance on it. It's not a very good picture but here's the one I built last fall. Between the cylinder and the pump it is good for 48 ton

Im leaning toward the 22 ton at tractor supply ,price is right and it will more than pay for itself especially if I sell a few loads of wood .

John, I have a 22 ton, 5HP splitter I bought several years ago, probably had it now maybe 12 years. Replaced the control valve once, had the cylinder re-sealed once about 2 years ago. If you burn a lot of wood, a good splitter is a wise investment in my opinion. If you decide to rent one, plan your day, have ALL the wood cut and invite neighbors and realatives for a "Splitting Party" I've done that in the past, chillie, brats and beer AFTER the splitting is done. Cutting wood now for use this fall I'm not sure it willl have a chance to dry or cure properly. I like to cut NEXT years wood this year before. I've alway heard that wood should dry or cure for 8-9 months or more before burning. Good luck.

Wood spliter is the only way to go. Lot faster them by hand and saves the back.

I had originally wanted a wood splitter with a 3 point hitch for my tractor but my tractor is not set up with the rear remotes for the hoses and its $1200 for that alone .Once the trees are on the ground I will get a splitter from Tractor Supply . The tree guy is waiting for dry weather ,it may be a long wait . He cut one last October and pulled off and just has moved his equipment back .

I have not posted on this in a while ,trees are down and logs piled in the edge of my woods ,I have been cutting and splitting wood every chance I get as well as trying to get my yard back to normal after all those logs being drug across the yard ,made many deep ruts .I already have enough wood split for this winter and have not even started on the freshly cut trees .I have been splitting all the notty logs and all the other pieces that I could not split with a maul. That wood splitter makes it so much easier and less painful on my back.
