Default My toes are numb!

It's in the low 30's and raining here. Been out in the shed with my son. He's reassembling a late 1960's Ford lawn tractor. It has a 10 or 12hp, not sure, Kohler engine, it's twice the size of the 19hp Kohler on the zero turn Toro we have and weighs about three times has much. The frame is heavy angle iron, front axle is cast iron, basically this thing is built like a tank.

Neat little tractor, if we can get it running we can use it for snow blowing the drive and other yard work. The zero turn is not designed to pull heavy a load like a lawn roller or loaded trailer, this Ford tractor is. Going up to Hartland, a few miles north of Brighton, tomorrow to look at a snow blower attachment for it. We could get a plow for it but that would require wheel weights and tire chains. We have an asphalt driveway and the chains would tear it up.

Anyway, interesting project. Amazing how many of these tractors are still around from the late 60's and early 70's, Ford LGT 110, 120, 125, 140 and 145. You can still find parts and accessories like plows and snow blowers for them on craigslist. Kind of like restoring a Chevelle but they don't make new parts for these, have to find the original stuff.

Sounds like a fun project, you could use cable chains and they should not tear up the driveway. I assume the numb toes are from the cold weather and working out in the shed. We are having record rain and wind today, but in the 50"s

Yes Ray, the numb toes were from standing on the cold concrete, it was around 34*. I should have put on warmer boots.

Hoping to get this thing running and put the snow blower on the front. Then I won't get numb toes shoveling or using the little push snow blower. Just hope all the parts are there so we can finish it. Might be missing a few small brackets that we'll have to fab up but looks like all the major parts are there.

Picked up the snow blower attachment yesterday. The guy had a huge pole barn with restored 1960's Ford farm tractors. Even had a fully restored LGT 120 like the one my son is putting together. This guy did some amazing work, the tractors all looked like new. Any metal that wasn't painted shined like it was chromed.

Even Tony would be impressed with this guys shop. Looked like he had every tool to do all the work himself. He had one torn apart that he was working on. One those with no frame, the engine, trans and rear axle when bolted together form the frame. They're not muscle cars but still pretty impressive.

I work with a guy that his passion is old John Deere tractors that he rebuilds and sells...it's all good as it still is mechanical and part of our heritage.

Finally got the wiring on the tractor figured out. The wires were disconnected, cut, hooked up wrong. The parts diagram showed the voltage reg terminals as L (light), B (battery), and F (field), top to bottom on the side. A (armature) terminal is on the back. Finally pulled it out and cleaned it up, L is on the bottom and F is on the top, diagram shows upside down. So we got it cranking over but no spark. Pulled the points and cleaned them up, had some corrosion and we got spark. Fired up using starting fluid but not on it's own. Carb float valve was plugged and stuck, along with valves in fuel pump. Mechanical fuel pump just like an old Chevy engine. It's pumping gas now. Have to reinstall the carb and see if it will run.

Too cold out there, my busted ass was getting pretty sore standing on the cold concrete so it was time to call it quits for the day. We're close now if we can get the right drive belt for it, it should move on it's tomorrow.
