Default HELP! What's it Worth? 1970 SS Reproduction

Hello,

I am new to this forum and I am looking to get some feedback on a Chevelle SS reproduction. It seems to me that you should never really pay more than 25,000 for a reproduction even if it is in top condition. This car is an orignal malibu with a 396 engine and 454 baging. There is no documentation with the vehicle and there is no information available on the rebuild. The dealer is asking 29,999. My question is what do you guys think it is actually worth? It looks, drives, and sounds great. There are no issues mechanically or cosmetically. Please see the link below (the dealers web-site) and let me know what you think.

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS recreation, 396/350hp (w/454 badges), auto, AC, PS, PDB, 12 bolt Posi, functional cowl induction, F41 suspension, full tinted glass, factory tach and gauges, Strato bucket seats w/console, Staple shifter Asking price:$29,900

Year: 1970 Make: Chevrolet
Model: Chevelle SS
Body Style: 2dr
Engine: 396/350
Transmission: auto
Vin Number:
Mileage: 56,674
Exterior Color: Forest Green Interior Color: Black
Comments: more to come!

It looks nice and I doubt you could build one like it for that price .

John,

That sounds like a dealer's response! : ) How much it costs to build a car is not necessarily relevant to the value of the car. You can spend $70,000.00 on a build and end up with a $30,000 car. I think it is aesthetically pleasing. There is still a question of price and value. It is esentially a 1970 Malibu with an upgraded engine and some decals that are nothing more than decoration. This is especially true since the badging and decals say 454 and its only a 396. I think it is a low 20's car and possibly a 25,000 car. I just can't see it being worth much more than 25. Here is some additional info I found on hemmings.com:

This 1970 Chevelle SS is GMs most sought after year in todays collector car/muscle car world. The exterior has a nice high gloss, Forest Green finish, white stripes, cowl induction, hood pins, 454 SS L-S5 badges. Older paint with a few touch ups, straight body with no waves in the exterior body lines. Solid doors and front fenders, new quarters, optional floor pans that are extremely nice, non undercoating, smooth finish, orig. trunk pan that has had only minor repair. Professionally refinished in the late 2000s. The car still looks terrific, factory AC-works! sport instrumentation tach and gauges, clock works, F41 sway bar, cowl induction system, full tinted glass, PS, PFDB, 14" super sport wheels with P235/60R 14" BF Goodrich TA radials. The car really has a really great stance and shows well for an older restoration. The exterior chrome is super nice, orig. stainless, bright work, trim, emblems, wheel house mouldings are also original and considered very good condition. Orig. soft ray tinted glass, original, new windshield replacement, weather strip, window felts have been recently replaced and are in very good condition. Front grille, headlamp bezels, taillight bezels are in very good shape. Looking under the hood, it has a late 60s 396 motor that runs good, Edelbrock alum intake, Holley dual feed carb, MSD Pro Billet dist., ceramic coated headers, with 3" exhaust, dual Flowmaster mufflers gives this car a nice rumbling sound. also, the car has the orig. correct style chrome tips extensions. The motor runs very good, plenty of power behind the TH400 rear axle. No rattle s or clunking, excellent acceleration. The car is very tight, mild shift kit. Most impressive once you're behind the wheel. The interior has Strato buckets with console and staple shifter. Orig. style SS steering wheel with no cracks, after market am/fm cassette player, nice clean interior. Recently reupholstered seat covers, door panels, headliner, shoulder belts, factory seat belts, dash pad all in very good condition. The trunk is nice and clean,, comes with a spare tire, jack, trunk mat. This car is considered a quality driver, older restoration that shows extremely well. No documentation. MA title. Just in time for car shows and cruise nights!

Sounds to me you already know the value what it's worth. Flash gave an honest answer in his post.
Few things I noticed is it's missing the Proportioning Valve by the master cylinder, so I wondering if it has drum brakes up front.
Also has the wrong trunk Chevelle emblem on the deck lid. Left fender curve does not match the door among other items. Dealers always price high.

Seems like a nice car by the pictures, but would have to see it up close in person to make an accurate call on it. I've seen 70' tribute cars sell for as much as $35,000 locally. However, super nice cars, almost couldn't tell they were "clones." $25K sounds about right if it is cosmetically and mechanically sound.

I don't think it's fair to say because it's a clone you shouldn't pay more than xxx dollars. There's a lot of things that affect the value of a car. Certainly being a true SS adds value but how much? As you said it's just some badging/decoration. If it has the options that make it an SS, big block, 12 bolt rear, F41 suspension, etc. what's the difference if they were installed at the factory or added later?

Personally I think people place too much value on a car being a true, documented SS. I've seen a lot of nice clones, nicer than my real SS, and consider many to be worth more than my car. I think a car should be valued based on what it is today, not what it started out as. Some additional value if it is a real SS? Sure, but how much? That's pretty subjective, you can drive the car and enjoy it, not the build sheet.

I can tell you this, assuming that car is not hiding rotten sheet metal, I would have been way ahead starting with that car (even at $30k) versus what I started with and then ended up putting into mine.

At the end of the day, it all depends on what you want and what you plan to do with YOUR car.
