I have a 1972 SS with the 454, but the vin is and H not a W! I have the original build sheet and all the numbers match to a tee. It was a customer order late in the year and he ordered a lot of options on the car and again everything matches. I had it inspected at a 60 year old Chevy store by their top guy who worked on these cars back in the day and he told me that it is correct and that in the factory they would pull a car off the line and that the vin was already in place. I just want to know if anyone else has seen this before.

As you know...an "H" as the 5th digit in a '72 Chevelle VIN denotes it's a 350 cu in/ 2 bbl car...which would also come with a 10 bolt rear.
I'm thinking it would be hard to prove otherwise... What do the VIN plate rivits look like? Date code on rearend? Fifth Character: Engine size/type D - 250cid L-6 1-bbl (L22) F - 307cid V8 2-bbl (L14) H - 350cid V8 2-bbl (L65) J - 350cid V8 4-bbl (L48) U - 402cid V8 4-bbl (LS3) W - 454cid V8 4-bbl (LS5)

72 SS came with a 350 and up. The engine could be a restamp. Without pictures of the engine pad stamping or pictures of the vin rivets anything could be a possible. Love to see some pictures of the car.

It is not a re stamp, like I said I have the build sheet and everything matches and have checked all numbers plus I have decoded all the numbers on the rear axle, trans, engine, carb, intake and they all match the build sheet. The car has theses options from the factory, AK1, AU3, A01, B51, B22, B37, B80, B84, B93, C08, C60, D34, D35, D55, D88, F41, GY2, G80, JL2, J50, K19, K30, K85, LS5, M40,NK4, N33, N40, PM7, T60, UM1, U14, U54, U76, V30, ZJ9, ZL2, ZP5, ZR8, Z14, Z15 AND XXX (customer order). Like I said it is loaded with option and everything matches. Again I was curious if any one has seen something like this before. All the tags match and have not been modified or changed.

As other have said before, H as the 5th character of the VIN = 350 2bbl. Believe what you want, but people do forge phony build sheets, trim tags, etc for these cars. My ex's father bought a supposed 70' LS6 convertible, everything seemed to check out. He continued to look the car over after taking delivery. Eventually figured out someone had done a great clone from a 307 Malibu. Luckily he caught it pretty quick and was able to solve the issue with legal action.
Buyer beware this day and age...
