I live in a small community with smaller homes and not really big lots. Many of the houses are older, mine was built in 1955. About 5 years ago the old man that lived behind us passed away. His home was on a big lot and was in such disrepair that whoever bought it was going to have to tear it down and rebuild. Well, they did, except that they built 2 huge houses on the lot. When the homes were built only one of the houses had a fence put along the back of the lot.
Here is a rough pic of what it looked like prior to the fence. S---Home-------Home-------/ I----------------------------/ D---------------------------/ E---Garage-----Garage------/ ---------------///////////////// S---------------------------/ T--My Garage---------------/ R---------------------------/ E-------My House-----------/ E T After S--/--Home-----Home--------/ I---/-------------------------/ D---/------------------------/ E----Garage----Garage-------/ -----////////////////////////////// S----------------------------/ T---My Garage---------------/ R----------------------------/ E-------My House------------/ E T We have been trying to figure out what is going on with this house for a few months now. The yourng man that bought it about 3 years ago, met a woman and moved in with her somewhere else. He rented the house to a friend of his and they moved out over the summer. Then there was a For Sale sign, then it was gone and our neighbors were wondering if the bank repossessed it. Now maybe I am just being a grumpy neighbot but I feel like we should have been told about this. It is a 6 ft wooden privacy fence that blocks my view from pulling out of my driveway. I know it probablly is what the code is for my city, cause the city inspector is really strict, especially when it comes to fences. I know because we wanted to put one up, but because we are on the corner of a main street, our fence could only be 4 ft tall, but the neighbors behind us can put up a 6ft fence. It really ticks me off. Sorry about the vent. I just hope that this family doesn't mind having the motor on my car revving at 6am on weekends. Just wondering.

Every area is different, but the front yard fence can't be over 3 1/2 feet in our area. Side yards and back yards can be 6 foot.

At my rental house I needed a tall fence and 6 ft was what was allowed but I decided to build one without a permit .The local fence companys told me 6 ft was all they would build period .My neighbor next door had 12 dogs and trash all over his yard and the city was tired of trying to deal with him as they had cleaned it up for him twice before and because he was so called disabled he got special treatment from the local judges and therefore the local cops got tired of trying to enforce the ordinances (cops told me so) .The cops told me to build whatever I needed as they would look the other way as they understood my problem .I built a fence 8' tall x 200 ft long just inside my property line and have had no problem at all .That neighbor is still there and his place is still the worst in the whole area which is one reason I have not tried to sell mine ,his will bring the value of mine down to much to worry about so it just stays a rental.

When we lived in Redford 4' was the highest you could have. Redford sounds like your neighborhood. Smaller lots, many of the homes built in the 50's. They said 4' because police could look over the top if they needed to. Anything higher and someone could easily hide on the other side.

Hank that is what I was thinking. My neighbors garage has been broken into once, now they have a tall fence to hide behind. David thinks I am over reacting, maybe I am, but I am mad.

We can't have fences in our HOA and we all have 1acre lots so there is nothing to fight about and others can't ruin our home values. There is always good and bad with HOA's

Yesterday I saw a moving truck outside, so I walked right up and introduced myself and me one of the homeowners. From what I understand my neighbors will be a mom, dad, 2 kids and one more on the way. Now I understand the need for a fence. Just don't have to like it.
