Default Honda Z 50 question.

What the heck I'll give it a shot and ask the question. The wife and I like ride Honda Z50 on the weekends and lately mine has developed a problem. It's a 1969 Z50 K1 that I've owned since it was new; I know it's been a long time!! Anyhow, starting a few months ago I started having problems shifting from first to second gear, it would miss second and go directly into third. Lately the warmer it gets the worse the problem becomes until it won't even go into first and just grinds or does nothing at all. After it cools down everything is fine again but it comes right back. Does anyone know what I might have to do to fix the problem? The local Honda shop is a waste of time; they just work on new bikes. Thanks in advance!!

I think I found a suitable replacement; a complete engine/transmission for $329 that is supposed to be a bolt it. Here’s fingers crossed.

Well the war continues, but I think I have a fix for the problem. Everything fit except for a petcock issue with the old tank; I tried everything I could do but came up dry on getting a replacement petcock (try to find one in 10mm with a 90 degree turn, what a nightmare) anyhow, I ended up buying a new tank from Clarke Industries with a valve that's flat and sits up in the tank. The only thing I'm going to have to add is an inline filter that I also ordered from them. Price was a little high at $250 but I already have $1000 into this project so did it really matter; the tank is arriving today per UPS.

I think I'm winning the fight now; all I need is a band clamp for the back of the fuel tank and I think I'll have enough room to clear the petcock. I'll stop at Pepboys tonight and with any GOOD luck I'll have fuel to the new engine. It's the small things that make you happy.

I think this is my own little sanity thread that I'm using so I don't end up throwing the whole project in the garbage can. Patients’ grasshopper; stay calm....

Well things went well last night; I think I finally have a fuel tank and petcock I can use that will work!! Hurray!!! Tonight I'm going to run the fuel line and then if I have time install the drive chain. Tomorrow I'm hoping to change out the rear tire if I can split the rim and then it's just gas, oil and with any luck I'll be test riding it Sunday.. Wish me luck!! Oh, I'll post some pictures tomorrow if anyone wants to see it.

I do need to paint the tank silver with red on the bottom but I figure I can do that at some other time. Now to start working on Mary's 1972 Z50 in about two weeks after working on this one for five weeks trying to solve a fuel issue. I figure with the new 70cc engine with 5.44 hp top speed should be around 55 MPH!
