do sending units go bad? and fuel line

ok so i went to my chevelle today to check out the gas tank and to see if i have a sending unit on it and sure enough i took the tank off and boom a sending unit is on the tank. but it has a wire kind of just hanging there. no end no connector just sitting there. is that a bad thing? and all i would need is this harness right?


and what do i do as far as the fuel line from the unit to the front of the car. do you guys use a steel line or do you do a braided line? rubber line? school me please
