Another vote for fuel pump or possibly pump relay.

The gas around the fuel pump keeps it cool and when the tank gets to low it heats the pump up and leads to an earlier failure of the pump.
I've heard that said about every car/truck that has an electric pump. Which means all the manufacturers use a pump that must be submerged in fuel. Yet no manufacturer ever says keep the tank at least 1/4 full. I'm just not buying it. As long as the pump is pumping fuel it's probably being cooled by that fuel.
