The el Camino is built from the floor pan & frame of a station wagon. The bed area has a bolted down "lid" in the front that hides a compartment that is left over from the rear seat foot-well of the station wagon.
Some owners have made the lid removable and are using the space to store stuff, or relocate the battery, etc. Dan
