Dont take my word for it but they do hang fairly loose . Someone with more knowledge than me will chime in.

I havent checked out my chevelle but on my four-link 59 when jacked up there is no load on the springs but still not loose enough to come out of the spring pockets unless the shocks are removed .... the shocks keep the rearend travel from going so far as to let the springs be removed

In Warputers case all he has to do is catch alittle air going over a railroad crossing and he is going to have a major malfuntion .... something is wrong with his setup

Is it possible that the coil springs are normal but with a full droop of the rear, the aftermarket gas shock allows too much travel?

Sounds like a possibility or the springs themselves dont belong under there.

I know my springs were loose with the rear hanging but the shocks were disconnected at the time. Not sure with shocks hooked up if it would drop that far.
