Was trying to figure out how to remove the lower shaft out of my steering column, its on a 67 chevelle, I know these are made to collapse in an accident the way they are made. But wondering if anyone had ever removed one of these.. I tried to seperate it but it looks like its in there really good. I did try beating on it while in a vice but figured I better quit and ask befor I damage something....

Well I figured it out. Info for anyone who need to know. If you heat the lowe shaft there are 2 holes on each side with injected plastic material. This will all ooze out the four holes and the shaft will slide right out with no problem....

Are you going to be putting it back in the car if so what are you going to use to replace the plastic you melted out of it.

Made that way so the column is collapsible on a collision...not really meant to be removed as far as I know...

Yep thats true. But thanks to them idiots at Hooker Headers my steering no longer fits. So I had to find a way to make it work by putting in a Knuckle which required me removing the shaft. Putting in a shere pin will work putting it back. Plus relying on 40 year tech on that working now don't worry me to much.

Assuming you're using heads with raised exhaust ports.
Common issue with the headers hitting the steering column. Most guys (including myself) just mark the interfering header tube(s) location, remove the header, and dimple the tube as needed. Actually can be done easily and still look decent. I use the side of a 2" dia piece of solid brass and smack it with a hammer. Creates a nice clearance radius on the tube. And it doesn't hurt performance...

This is just a 454 with aluminum pro comp oval heads. I guarantee it would have hit more than one of the hedertubes. Plus I have a real problem with denting my new ceramic headers. Even after removing the lower steering shaft it would not go between the headers and the upper arm controls. I had to remove the steering box just to slide the shaft in. I just have a problem with a company like Hooker that I tell them what engine I have and I should not have to be hammering on a new set of headers because they screwed up.
