John, I have a 22 ton, 5HP splitter I bought several years ago, probably had it now maybe 12 years. Replaced the control valve once, had the cylinder re-sealed once about 2 years ago. If you burn a lot of wood, a good splitter is a wise investment in my opinion. If you decide to rent one, plan your day, have ALL the wood cut and invite neighbors and realatives for a "Splitting Party" I've done that in the past, chillie, brats and beer AFTER the splitting is done. Cutting wood now for use this fall I'm not sure it willl have a chance to dry or cure properly. I like to cut NEXT years wood this year before. I've alway heard that wood should dry or cure for 8-9 months or more before burning. Good luck.
