Chevelle in the banner.

Aren't those mirrors wrong for an SS car in '71?

shadowgray396 02-08-2012 08:36 PM

No, unless you ordered sport mirrors. Not sure if that mirror was put on at the factory in 71 on the right side.

I need to correct what I said earlier. The SS package did come with a sport mirror but left side only but you could order it with the remote mirror instead.

D33 Outside Rear View Mirror, Remote Control $ 12.65. You have to remember there were a lot of things done by special order that were allowed. I don't thing the sport mirror was all that popular in 71, it seemed to catch on more in 72.

Right side mirrors were thought back then that they were not needed, unlike todays cars.

I thought a left remote sport mirror was standard on '71 Super Sports.

I have questioned that too... however, my girlfriend's aunt owns an original 71' SS 454 Chevelle. She bought it with fairly low miles sometime in the late 70's - early 80's. It has a chrome remote mirror on the driver's door only. Her car was built at the Arlington plant by the trim tag/build sheet. The car is very original body & interior-wise, and currently has only one repaint.

Wait, isn't the chevelle in the banner a 72 not a 71?

carpoor 02-20-2012 09:01 PM

It looks like it has 71' side markers, with a 72' grille now that I really have eye-balled it.

shadowgray396 02-20-2012 09:25 PM

Good catch, It's missing the center trim on it. 71 and 72 use the same grill, it's the trim package that was different I believe?

Derek69SS 02-21-2012 09:17 PM

Grilles were different, as were the headlight bezels

So let me get this right. My 72 Malibu should have the black headlight bezels, or is it only for the SS ?

carpoor 02-22-2012 07:47 PM

Only the SS had the blacked out bezels and the two center stainless strips deleted. Your Malibu should have the unpainted bezels.

Also, the 71' headlight bezels are different, look at the shape in the two pictures. The difference is very clear.

My 72 El Camino SS has the black bezels and Joans 72 Malibu has the chrome bezels ,but I understand some SS cars came with the chrome bezels as well.

It just makes you shake your head.

The 72SS did have the blacked out bezel with a little chrome on the side. Problem was most of it fell off after a year or so.

Ms Grumpy 02-23-2012 06:57 PM

I had to go into the garage today, so I checked out which ones I had. Yep, I think I have the right ones.
