Hospital crap
The last few days have had me running to the hospital lots. My brother has been fighting stage 4 cancer for a year or so. We thought he would be done early spring. Surprised us all. I signed the end of life papers on Thursday. They have him on the morphine drip tonight. He is in the hospice room at the hospital.
The wifes mother, 86 years old, fell in the kitchen at her house last Thursday night. She laid there for 3 hours before Kathy found her. Broke her arm, busted her nose up pretty good, and has a nasty bump on her head, causing brain bleed. She is in intensive care, a few rooms from where my brother has been for 9 days. Ever notice how many really overweight people work in hospitals? |
So sorry to hear about your brother and your wifes mother. Tough time of the year for family. I lost my mom when I was 8 just 10 days before Christmas, I remember it like it was yesterday. Our prayers will be with you and your family.

Sorry to hear this Tony. It's tough but like Ray said just before the holidays make it harder. They moved my mother from the hospital to a real hospice. She wasn't there long but it was worth it. They know how to take care of people at that stage of their life. She looked so much better and at peace. It really was a blessing having her go there instead of the hospital. Just saying if it's possible a real hospice may be better for your brother and the rest of the family.

Sorry to hear about your brother and mother in law ,prayers to you all ,never a good time for this type thing .
|
Thanks. MIL is out of intensive care now. They are going to send her to a rehab joint until she can move her arm. They say the brain-bleed will be OK. Lots of swelling, but is going down.
I just checked on my brother. Nurse said he is sleeping now. The morphine drip seems to make him a lot more comfortable. He doesn't want to go to any kind of assisted living, so I'm not sure what they are going to do. The doctor led us to believe he won't last much longer. He has less than 20% lung capacity, which makes it hard to breathe. This shit sure does drag on and on. |
That's a shame Tony. If all they're doing is trying to keep him comfortable and wait until passes he should be in a hospice. They can make him comfortable, probably more comfortable and it costs about 1/10 of the hospital costs.
|
Sorry to hear all this Tony and our thoughts are with you and Kathy right now.
As for Hospice I agree with Hank, when my dad was in his last days in 2008 we decided on home hospice and they were great and he was home where he wanted to be with family around. |
I'm waiting to hear from someone at the hospital about what they plan to do. I asked about hospice the other day, but couldn't get a straight answer. Will see what happens later today.

I just got a phone call. He is fadeing fast. They have him on th 9th floor at McLaren, which is the hospice floor. The nurse wanted to know if he is allergic to some (atavan?) pain medication. I'm like, damn, at this stage your'e worried about THAT?
|
Nurse said they have him on the adavan and have increased his morphine. He is changing color, which indicates his organs are shutting down. The ex-girlfriend of his was supposed to handle all the funeral and creamation details. She's been telling me that for 5 days. I called her and told her what was going on. Guess what. She has made no phone calls or had any contact with anyone rerarding creamation or funeral. I got ahold of someone just now, so we will be good to go. I hate most people. A phone call from to let me know she didn't follow through sure would have been nice. I hate most people.
Kathy is at hospital with her mom. She is doing good. Many thanks for the concers. Means a lot to me. |
So sorry that now that is thrown on you at the last minute as well, if people would just be honest and do what they say they will do the world would be a better place.
If you need anything please let me know. I do everything but Windows. |
It may sound bad but hope he goes soon. It does no one any good to let him linger and suffer they way he has been. You and Kathy are in our thoughts Tony.
|
Thanks Hank. I talked to the nurse at around 4:30 this morning. She said his breathing is very shallow and today should be his last. I agree, it makes no sense to me to see him this way. The should be able to do something, but there are "laws" they have to follow.
|
We will keep you and your family in our prayers today.

Tony, I am so sorry to hear about your brother. It sounds like you have been preparing yourself for a while. I hope that he doesn't suffer much more.

Just got off the phone with the nurse. I am as shocked as she is that he is still living. Still on the morphine drip and atavan. Hasn't eaten in 3 or 4 days. She said he has opened his eyes a couple of times, but is unresponsive to her talking. When she came in at 7 last night, they told her he would be gone by this morning. He is a fighter, but I don't understand why he is still hanging on. It was his choice to go on the morphine drip as opposed to another round of the ventilator.
Kathy's mom is going in at 2 this afternoon for a pacemaker. She was supposed to start therapy today, but I guess not. She will come stay with us when she gets out. |
All the best for Kathy's mom. My great aunt, turned 101 in June, fell about 5 years ago. If was on a cement basement floor, she busted up her eye socket, pressure caused her to lose sight in that eye. She didn't want to stay in the hospital and the very next day fell and broke her leg. She's tough as nails though, still lives alone and still going strong. My uncle lives close and does her shopping and get's her to her Dr's appointments but she goes out with her friends to lunches and card parties all the time. She's busier than Lynda and I are.
So hopefully this is just a temporary glitch for Kathy's mom too. |
My brother Chris died at 4:54 this morning. When I spoke to his nurse last night around 9PM, she said they were considering moving him from the hospital to an assisted living facility. He must of heard that conversation and said "hell no, I aint going there", and called it a day. He was adamant he wasn't going into one of those places. R.I.P.
Kathy's mom had the pacemaker installed. She seems to be doing OK. Will know more in a couple of hours. |
Sorry for your loss Tony. You've knew this was coming for months but it's still a loss that hurts.
|
Tony ,Im sorry for your loss but he is in a better place with no pain .Also glad your mother n law is doing better.
|
Rest in peace Chris.
Sorry to hear the news Tony |
RIP...How old was he ?
|
Sorry for the Family's loss Tony. Now he has no more suffering or pain. On the plus side, good to hear that your Mother In Law is doing better.
|
Sorry for your loss, glad to hear your mother inlaw is doing better with the pace maker.
|
Thanks everyone. I agree, he is better off now than with all the crap he's had to endure the last year. I know that I sure as hell don't want to die like that. One shot betwen the eyes with a 45 would be nice for me. I donated his eyes and some tissue to the Mid Michigan eye place. Been a hell of a couple weeks.
Kathy has spent every morning and evening up there with her mom. I'm doing all the stuff around here that she normally does. Damn, she does a lot! Chris would have been 57 next month. |
My Brothers obituary:
WONCH, CHRISTOPHER Christopher Lynn Wonch died December 11, 2013 at McLaren hospital after a battle with cancer, a month and one day shy of his 57th birthday. Cremation has taken place, per his wishes. Chris had five brothers and five children. Chris spent forty years drinkin' whiskey, smokin' dope, chasin' women, fist fighting, and riding his Harley. Mostly on the East Side, but he was known to travel. He made some friends, made some enemies too. If there is a heaven, he's riding his Harley with a bandanna hanging on the handlebars, if there is a Hell, so be it. So long Chris. It's been a hell of a ride. .Published in Flint Journal on Dec. 13, 2013 Print | View Guest Book .Helpful Links |

Any of you guys that know me, you know I speak the truth and generally speak my mind. I could have said a lot more, but anyone that knew Chris will say the obit is spot on. Got lots of feedback on it, all positive. Like Les said, most everyone that has read it knows that I wrote it.
Thanks for all of your thoughts. Kathy's mom has had a set-back. Her broken arm and hand on that side is swollen pretty bad. They did some Doppler tests and found blood clots. They can't give her any medication for the clots because of the brain-bleed. We will know more today, after the neurosurgeon sees her. |
