Unhappy Old Parts, Keep or Sell

As many of you have done I'm sure, over the years I have accumulated a lot of parts for my Chevelle. Got to thinking the other day about thinning the pile and getting rid of some items The other part of me says nawwwwww, just keep them "you may need them some day". Some of what I have are duplicates, muncie 4 speeds-the good bellhouses-Hurst shifters-stock flywheels internal and external balanced-old BBC side mount torker intake-brackets-valvecovers- holley carbs etc. What do you guys do when you get to this point. Not really needing the money but it would come in handy. I have gotten some really good deals on stuff and bought it even though I didn't need it for the old "just in case" scenario. About the only thing I can't use at this point are the pedal set(s) for 1st gen camaro with a hurst shifter.

Probably won't do anything and my wife and kids can take care of it when I go to the big car seat in the sky!

In all honesty, I think I should get rid of some items just to make sure they don't just get lost in th shuffle and someone gets some use from them.

You might find a lot of reward in knowing that you're possibly keeping part of hotrodding alive by passing on some of your things. If this is a situation where you don't "need" these things, or aren't trying or needing to get "rich" off of them, times are tight, maybe you could put a reasonable amount of $ in your pocket and know that you helped put 3 or 5 or 8, or even 1 otherwise halted for lack of funds old project car(s) on the road this year. I'm not trying to get you to give away your stuff D, just a thought.

We had talked about this on a thread not to long ago. How do you make the right decision, do I keep it or do I sell it? We all know of someone who is a "hoarder" of parts, some because they do own a car that maybe they can use the parts, someday, maybe. We also know alot of people who have spent months looking for that "one" part, because they wanted to use original parts.

I have to admit, that in a way, I was a hoarder, until a few months ago. It has taken 14 months to get my Chevelle on the road again. In those many months, I have searched and searched and searched some more, for parts that are probably sitting on the shelf in someones garage. I started to think when I have some "original" parts that I was not gonna use, about how I would feel knowing that someone else was getting the oportunity to get their car on the road because of me, and bonus, I could get some cash in my pocket.

This is just my opinion. But, someone, maybe even someone you know, could use those parts that are collecting dust.

To everyone:

Thanks for the comments. I think I may part with some of the stuff that I know I will not use. I do have some things that I will obviously keep. Am thinking I will go through all my parts over the next month or so and put out a list of free items and things I want to sell.

For the life of me though, I just don't understand some people's idea of the value of parts. Looking at several sites, I see stuff I would give away and they are asking money for it. For instance, old early sbc valve covers, factory timing chain covers, intakes etc. I have a set of old 14" rims for a 66 Nova that are original that I would tell someone to take and haul off but I bet there would be some who would try and sell them. I'll post here when I get a list of "freebies" for anyone that may want them. My dog may not appreciate his dog-dish hubcap being taken away but what the heck!!

Many thanks for the input!!

That's the bad part about giving away parts. If you know someone needs them and will use them, great. Others will take them and try to sell them to make a buck, that's not why you give parts away.

Hank

Agree 100%. That is why I will try to see that the freebies I give will go to people who have participated on the forums. Hopefully that will mean they will go to those who want parts for their use, not for resale.
