I am looking for a rear end for my 68. My questions is what options do I have? I looked at rear ends from 66 and 67. I have also looked at rears from olds, Pontiac and Buick but they were 71 and 72's. I was also told that a rear from a 72-73 Monte Carlo would work. I did not take the tape measure with me so forgive me for taking the lazy way out and counting on the expertise of the fine individuals on this forum. Any help is greatly appreciated!

66 rearends are about 1" narrower then 68 up. The Chevelle and Monte Carlo use alot of the same parts and are interchangeable.

So will the Monte Carlo bolt in without any modifications?

70-72 Monte Carlo are the same as 68-72 Chevelle & El Camino
Some time in '72 they started using the corporate 8.5" 10-bolt which is a great option much cheaper than a 12-bolt and way stronger than the 8.2" 10-bolt. They still put those same internals in new Chevy trucks, so parts are plentiful and cheap.

1973 and newer are not a direct bolt in.

Have you looked into getting a 9in? Depending on what your intentions are for the car it is a great option.
