Does anyone have a good link for county codes? I found a great site for old Florida tags, but am having trouble finding anything for North Carolina. My car came from Hickory, NC. I want to buy a 1972 NC tag and stick it on the front. I purchased a mint 1972 Florida tag today. It has the correct prefixes for the county I live in and the vehicle weight/type. (8W) Here in FL we are allowed to use an old tag as our primary tag after approval by the state.
I am hoping to do the same for my father when he gets his 66' GTO this weekend. I already found him a 72' Florida tag for his 72' Lemans Sport. Thanks in advance.

I did a DMV search for my state on using old plates, and that's how I found my info. I'm now using my original plate I had in high school with the 70 tag on it and have a special interest tag I keep in the glove box to show that it has current tags. Each state will be different.

I was lucky enough to find 1972 plates for mine. The only problem is that they are dealer plates because in 1972 Michigan started using the stickers on the plates. I found my set of plates about 10 yrs ago and they are still in the sleeve they came in and have never been registered. I never put them on the car because I wanted to register it as a classic until I found out the limitations that Michigan puts on classic cars.

Cannot find anything definitive like the Florida tag site. I think I am just going to look for a 72' NC tag I like, and purchase it.
I feel it will be a nice touch. Any input? I am also trying to find an old dealership tag frame or emblem from a "high performance" dealership from that area of NC.

Hank is right,
I bought a 1970 "Dealer" plate at the swap meet during the Frankenmuth carshow one year. It to had never been used. It cost $35.00 to register. The best part it never expires! I've drivin the Chevelle all over Mi. and as far south as Kokomo, Ind. and have never had a problem.

I've have the Chevelle registered for 15 years with 69 plates and never been pulled over (and I should have been a couple times when I was following Hank at "Back to Bricks". Hank, this is the plate you should have on your's....It would look great.

I'm thinking they won't let registration the dealer plate anymore per following. A color photocopy, a color scan, or color photograph of the license plate (passenger, commercial, trailer, or motorcycle). Do not mail the actual plate. Personalized, government, law enforcement, manufacturer, dealer, in-transit repair, disability, and special purpose plates cannot be used as authentic license plates. If in doubt, check with the department before purchasing a license plate. Proof of ownership, preferably a copy of the vehicle title Proof of Michigan no-fault insurance (not required for trailers) $35 -- make checks or money orders payable to State of Michigan A completed Application for Historical Michigan License Plate
