Default My daughter's first date

Let me start by saying I have three girls and they're all gorgeous, so as a dad, I have aneurisms on a regular basis.

Anyway, my oldest is 15 and she went out on her first official date last night. I'm ex-military with some time in the sand box and PTSD to prove it. SO, ...I'm out in the shop working on my Chevelle when Cora, (my oldest) comes out to inform me that she's going on a date and the guy will be here any minute.

I've had visions of this moment for years. The ole' cleaning a gun when he shows up, whispering in his ear, they'll never find his body, etc.

Cora asks me nicely, "When you meet him can you not be, ...well, ....you."

Ummm. Ok.

So he shows up and I introduce myself and we talk for a little bit before they leave. I was trying very hard to be nice. Honest.

On the way to dinner, the boy asks Cora if "I'm always like that." She says sheepishly, "...yeah".

Then he says, "He scares the crap out of me and I don't usually intimidate easily."

So Cora tells a secret. "Yeah, he was in the Army and can kill people with his thumb."

They had a second date for tonight, but he called and said he had an anxiety attack and backed out. ..... ....Gee, I hope it wasn't me.

.......I REALLY WAS TRYING TO BE NICE!!!

So, everything went perfectly!

Now he'll tell ALL of his buddies, and every kid in town will know to respect your daughter, and you didn't even have to kill anyone with your thumb to get the message out.

I had an application to date my daughter ready when my daughter started to date. The one rule we had if we did not know the boy he had to come to the house first.

I have three nieces, one will be 15 this year. I already have plans to show up and be the "crazy uncle." I remember holding her when she was born three weeks early. It doesn't seem that long ago. I still see her as a sweet little girl, and have told her that if anyone even tried to hurt her - that her father and I would make sure they never found the body. The other two are 6 & 10, and I am equally dreading the day they reach a certain age.

I have no kids of my own, most likely never will. But that doesn't stop me from wanting to let these kids know that I am there for them.

Maybe your daughter is smarter than you think she is. Maybe she didn't have the heart to say no to him about a second date and was thinking how am I going to get out of this. I know I'll tell him about the deadly thumb story.

My daughters first boyfriend was a scumbag. She was young and dumb and saw the light after a year. After a couple of others I had to take matters into my own hands and hand pick one for her. They have been together 4 years and are now engaged to be married. True story.

Alan, your post brought back so many memories. We did not allow any of our kids, daughters especially, to date until they were 16. Those were the rules when I was growing up and we figured that it would give them their 1st year in High School to find out what clubs and or sports they wanted to do without a boyfriend/girlfriend influence. And we too had a "date my daughter application" which was pretty scary.

Here is a picture of my 2 older daughters with the other bartenders from Luna, a bar in Royal Oak that they worked at before moving.

Lacie (my 3rd oldest) is on the far right, in the black. And Jennifer (my oldest) is in the middle, in the red outfit.

I've never said anything about the thumb, thing. Those were her words. We try to leave her be and let her make her own mistakes, but we're very clear there is a line that can not be crossed. She's a good kid, though.

Since I'm a mechanic, my hands are always covered in scars. I'm also too lazy to shave every day, so I usually have a couple day scruff under my high and tight hair cut. I've been told I look like serial killer more times than I care to remember.
