Default Dinosauer in a "smart" world...me

I like cables and knobs to work things. I like points and condensers. I like carbs and mechanical linkage. I want to be able to see how things work, be able to take things apart and fix them. I hate this changing world. Way too much electronic shit for me. Case in point, Kathy bought me a 60" "smart" TV and a Bose sound system for it for Christmas. She did this when I was in Florida. She hooked it all up and had it working fine. I get home, don't even see it in the living room. Too excited to get back out here in my workshop. When I get in here, I see my old big ass TV setting here. So I go back in and discover the new-fangled one. I turn it on. no volume. Takes me 15 minuets to get sound. Push this button, push that button, get mad, curse, push some more buttons that I can't tell what the symbol means. Now there are three remotes I have to use. One for cable box, one for TV, and one for sound. Andrea came home for Christmas and got one remote to do everything, but I still have to push three different buttons to make all the shit work. Nice picture though. MIL bought me a wireless copy machine, fax, printer gizmo for out here in the shop. I started hooking this thing up at 8 this morning. They don't send an instruction manual with stuff anymore. Only a "picture book" that has the unpacking instructions. Have to put a CD in the computer to see what to do. I messed with this thing until lunch time. Can't get the wireless to work. Can't get any of it to work. Finally call tech guy at Canon. Hey, he's an American, right here in the USA!! Tell him what is going on. Tell him the online thing says the wireless is good for 164 feet. I'm about 100 feet from the router. What they don't tell me is the wireless won't go through four walls to get here. So I end up going to Stalpes, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and have to buy a new USB port thing, because my laptop only has two, and a cable to hook the machine to the computer. 70 bucks later, I got the miserable thing working. I think. Bring back the 60's. Oh yeah, because of the new TV in the house, I ended up moving three other ones. One in the kitchen, one in the bedroom, and the one out here. Sounds simple, huh? The stinking remotes all had to be re-programed for the different cable un-scramble things. I hate electronic shit.

Same boat here. My favorite TV just left the house. New flat screen TV now installed. Have one remote to run the the TV and Cable box since the remote can learn the TV siginal. But 2 more now to run the Blueray and DVD player. Life was simple at one time, we just make it complicated. So far the TV in the garage has not been changed out yet. Just had to add more internet connections since my daughter and husband are living with us. More upgrades and more cost.

I like mechanical things, like the Chevelle. Simple, I can tell what does what, take it apart, put it back together. On the other hand I started working on computers in 1973. Spent the next 37+ years either fixing them or programming them. I liked that things were always changing, something new every year so things never got boring. So all the new stuff doesn't scare me and doesn't bother me.

Some of today's tech stuff is over done IMO. Features and options that aren't necessarily useful but sound sexy and help sell the thing. All and all though I think what we have available today is amazing. I'm okay with it and wouldn't want to go back.

Damn Tony it's like Kathy doesn't even know you. But I'm sure they don't make tubes for your old TV anymore so you would've had to upgrade anyway.

I think she is trying to ease me into the modern world. It took her a few years to convince me that I should have a cell phone. Do they still call them "cell phones"?
