I'd tweak the timing on that HEI...modify the timing curve. If possible, you'll want a total timing of 36-38 degrees all in by around 3k rpms and as much initial timing as the starter can stand.
Add to that about 10 degrees of vacuum advance. It'll run cleaner, cooler, and more responsive.
